(Historic Brick)
Cleaning brick, also known as acid washing, should only be performed by a qualified Brick Cleaner who holds a Working at Heights certification and follows The Standards & Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places In Canada, the Canadian Benchmark for historic conservation.
Here is our 6-step method to Complete Basic Brick Cleaning.
- Take “before” pictures
- Identify the staining on the brick and acquire the proper equipment, detergents, and PPE.
- Prep the work area by covering windows, metallic objects, and foliage.
- Pre-soak the work area and apply the detergent.
- Wait a few seconds then rinse the detergent off the brick.
- Clean up the work area and take your “after” pictures.
In summary, these are the basics of brick cleaning. That being said the level of expertise, equipment, and investment needed for completing a desirable brick cleaning job is often outside the realm of an experienced DIY’er!
